Mukuru

Money Transfer Service

Mukuru is one of Africa’s largest money transfer providers and financial services platform operators.

Mukuru enables customers in the UK to transfer money to a select number of countries in Africa (as well as India) – Botswana, DRC, Kenya, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Nigeria, South Africa, Swaziland, Uganda, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.

Their service includes:

  • Cash transfers
  • Mukuru funeral arrangements
  • The Mukuru card
  • The Mukuru wallet
  • Mukuru purchases

Supported payment methods vary depending on where you are in the world, but from South Africa, you have a few options: Cash deposit at one of Mukuru’s partner branches, online or phone banking, bank transfer, or via a Mukuru Money prepaid debit card, which all customers in South Africa qualify for. South Africa is the only country in Africa that allows bank transfers with them.

They charge a fixed fee depending on how much money you transfer. In addition, Mukuru makes money by adding a margin to the exchange rate offered. You can find out the exchange rate online using Mukuru’s price check tool.

Mukuru has 60 partnerships that allow more than 100 brands to offer payout points.

More than 800 Orange Booths (cash pick-up points) are available in Southern Africa, and Mukuru also has a presence in Asia.

Mukuru has over two million registered customers and more than 40 million transactions annually.

The company was founded by Zimbabwean entrepreneur Rob Burrel.

Mukuru is regulated by the FCA.

Due to poor customer reviews regarding long waiting times and canceled transfers, we rank Mukuru on our “Orange Compliance” list.
